The site of one of the UK’s nuclear power stations, Dungeness is also a very interesting place to visit to take photographs. There is not one but two lighthouses, the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch railway and lots of old boats, cabins and other relics. It seems to lend itself very well to black and white photography.
Best time to visit – On a cloudy, stormy day.

The site for some of the equestrian events for the London Olympic Games in 2012, Greenwich is a London Borough that is rich in history, especially of the Naval variety. It is also the site of the Greenwich Observatory and the Meridian, the basis of Greenwich Meant Time runs though the middle. There is also the Cutty Sark, currently being restored following a fire, the Painted Hall and a great market. Lots to see and many photo opportunities.

There are China Towns in many cities of the World but the one in London has to be one of the best and most vibrant. Part of Soho, it is a wonderful area for street photographers and also excellent for food, of course.

Lisbon is the Capital of Portugal but it isn’t like many other Capitals. It is relatively small and quiet and the natives are very friendly indeed. Situated where it is in the South of Europe it has good weather and there are many wonderful photographic opportunities at every turn. It is also a good base for excellent golf in Estoril and the surrounding area and there is a Casino as well if you are that way inclined. The picture here is a view of the town from Castelo Sao Jorge.

The Tate Modern Gallery is a great place to visit when you are in London and if you are lucky they might have a photography exhibition on when you get there. If not there are lots of good pictures anyway. However, take your camera and head for the balcony on the second floor, next to the bookshop and you will get a great panorama stretching from the wobbly bridge, past St Paul’s Cathedral and over to Blackfriars. I am grateful to my friend Mick Taylor for the tip and for the wonderful panoramic shot you see here.

Nazaré is reputedly Portugal’s most famous fishing village and beach and this is some testament, in a Country that specialises in both these things. It supposedly got its name from a statue of the Virgin Mary brought to the town by a Monk in the 4th Century. Some of the locals still wear traditional costume, so spend at least a day there with your camera and with the views of the beach, the town itself and the colourful locals, you can’t go wrong.

Box Hill is a tremendous place to visit with your camera, especially in Autumn and at sunrise or sunset. Owned by the National Trust and therefore offering great facilities for refreshments, it is also excellent for walking, cycling or just looking at the views. One of the highest points on the North Downs, south of London, it was also the scene of the famous picnic in Jane Austen’s “Emma”. Box Hill Fort is nor pretty but it is well worth looking at and photographing. It was built in the 1890′s of reinforced concrete to help defend the Empire from invasion by Europe. No further comment needed.

A short walk from the top of Box Hill, the World renowned and National Trust owned top of the North Downs in Surrey is “the other side of the hill” or to give it its correct title Lodge Hill. It overlooks Dorking the Burford Bridge Hotel and is a wonderful place to take late evening photographs. On the rare occasions that it snows, it is also a wonderful toboggan run.
